work

Thanks for all your prayers and thoughts!

I cancelled my interview for the second 10 hour a week job, though i felt sorry about it and wonder what it would have been like to work for them (my Avon supervisor). But then I found out my other client needs a job next week, and then also found out my other transcription job actually pays 2x as much as I expect (they pay per double space, not single space, which I didn’t remember from 2000!) So I didn’t really need another job.

and the start of my husband’s business site….

[note from 2010 – we don’t really practice the brightness.html business at this time – and I am on a minimum mode with type-align but if anyone is interested in transcription, let me know what your turnaround time need is and I will consider your terms.]

(additional 2020 -wow, can’t believe those business sites still open!  will have to get them on our line-bright site in some fashion — ironically starting transcription again shortly after a 9 year break….)

fun fun!

I don’t really want more business right now but getting my name out a little may not be a bad thing in case this job would get too slow or not work out. I did a business card too with that same logo on it and my husband made his own also with the logo on his web site (he actually made his card first and I stole the logo off it and put on the site).

dori, who has to get back to typing CD #2 of 3 due Tuesday…

prospects…

He’s not sure what he really wants to do but at this point needs to just get something fast. We’re really hoping once Ryan goes to school I can work more and then he’ll work less and go back to school. He’s got to settle what career he’s going to do but he needs more schooling. So this next job he gets will probably be just another “job” and not his career, but who knows….

Amazingly I have been offered this job:
SECRETARY Part-time. Work from home preparing marketing materials. Exc. typing, organizational, computer proficiency in Word, Power Point, E-mail/internet.
that I applied for today in the News-Herald via email! I just have to pick up my StartStop pedal from the other house and make sure it’s compatible to this computer in transcribing CD’S. I can’t believe it. I probably will be working 10 hours a week. Rog is going to help me until he finds a job.

Wow, who would have known?

don’t want to remember the big job hunt days…

haven’t been reading, things are nuts. Newest news:

Ohhh boy. Rog called his workplace and was directed to call his supervisor on his supervisor’s cell phone. Turns out Jeff his supervisor, along with another person doing the same kind of thing at the workplace, were laid off. There’s no work in sight. So Rog is out job hunting. He’s not technically lost his job or anything, but with no work and all these layoffs, it doesn’t look good. He’s worked 5 days since the beginning of December. Luckily we had saved up during the “fat” times but now that the lean times have been here quite a while we’ve almost used it up. I’m glad we were wise enough to save….

I have been thinking of something too. With my family situation I hesitate to look for a permanent job, but I did call the temporary agency Robert Half Legal that I worked for back in 2003 (I did a 6 week assignment for them before that full time job I had for 6 months). I asked if I wished to, may I be put on a list to be called for temporary assignments. He said yes. I said is there any penalty if I turn down an assignment and he said no. So if Rog doesn’t find a job in a week or two I think I may sign up with them again. My name is in their system. I did not sign up, yet.

I’m also going to call back this other attorney that called me sometime last year asking for temporary help. I’m going to see if they still need someone.

I told Rog maybe the Lord has something better in store now now that we’ve moved – that he used the other job to get us this house (you know, long term job placement – he was there for almost 6 years). Maybe we’ll find something with insurance. I know you can get insurance with Robert Half but you have to work a lot. I don’t think I could work that much, now.

I have thought of the home work too but I think it’s just too hectic right now to try and do that. I’d need the kids in school all day to try and focus on work at home. (I don’t even know where all my equipment is….) Even with Rog home it sounds crazy. We are talking about putting the door back on the office so we can close it. That is a future option!!!

Well, I guess that’s all my new news- which is big news.. sigh. I did accomplish a big computer project which I was proud of – after the “middle aged” computer (2000 Dell) died I got my old one here from my mom’s house, and set it up and networked it. Then I programmed the old fax to work so am back in business with a working network and fax. Even got my old fonts back off the old computer that I loved and couldn’t find – especially CAC Pinafore! Still want to eventually fiddle with the middle-aged Dell and get it to work for Colleen as she has Insaniquarium on there. She doesn’t like my old Wonderex 486 – too slow for her!!! it is souped up to Pentium 1 for goodness sake! ha ha – it’s my baby from 1995 — worked on that machine for 8 years in DOS Word Perfect.

life, reflections, work, work at home

tired of things….

I know it’s all part of being a mom…. at home.

But for some reason I just had this urge just now to find a job! I know I CAN’T! But I was perusing the legal secretary ads for some reason. I couldn’t stop. I worked for SO long at so many different things and I loved it. Over 1 year as a word processor in 87. 6 years from 88-94 and another 7 months in 2003 at a legal secretary job that I loved. And another 4-5 part time legal secretary jobs that were okay, just okay, through the years. Then one full time legal secretary job in 03 that I hated in many ways but loved the work. I really did have enough of working.

When i was done for good in Dec. of 03 I was OVERJOYED! Excited to be a stay at home mom, to be DONE with the rat-race. Ready to have my picture perfect house, work out many hours at the Y, volunteer, spent lots of quality time with my kids doing orderly crafts, teaching them perfect manners, and cooking lots of from scratch meals and having a garden. Oh, AND IMMEDIATELY starting my music therapy program at college.

HA HA HA HA HA.

Not to leave anything out, from 94-02 I also worked AT HOME – a lot. Typing at home for some attorneys. Typing at home for the word processing job I worked at in 87. Working at home for corporate transcription firms out of state. And finally (I LOVED THIS) legal transcripts for a court reporter. I just got ANOTHER offer to do this this summer doing criminal transcripts. I love doing those…. I wanted to say yes badly. But I said no. Because I know I can’t handle it.

I LOVE BEING HOME. But I need a break. I think school starting for my kids in 5 or 6 weeks will be good for me. I just need a break.

But I loved a lot about working – the finishing something feeling, the time alone, the breaks, the lunch hours, the MONEY! I liked dressing up. And the break wasn’t that bad.

But I also hated a lot of it – the driving, the rushing, the panicking if I wasn’t perfect, the fear over losing my job over my kids’ illnesses (which I did, twice), and missing my kids. And working at home isn’t perfect either — you do get more flexibility but you have to STILL DO YOUR WORK – all night if need be. I remember falling asleep at my desk many nights trying to do all nighters and still get up at 6 to get kids off to school.

So, I know I am blessed, I’m home, I don’t have to do this anymore.  We are making enough now to look for a bigger house.

Well, just had to vent a little, though I think this is disjointed and doesn’t make much sense! I’ll write more later– dishes, cooking dinner, piles of papers I sorted, bills, laundry, and a little boy sitting in the stroller and an older son hungry for dinner await! (Colleen is having fun with grandma today!)….. I don’t usually just park Ryan in the stroller but he was really driving me nuts – he threw something and hit me in the head — OUCH – I had to put ice on it.

Cutting down on computer time.

just posted this in my other group — thought I’d update here too.

Comments: Hi – had to make a tough decision about 5 weeks ago and cut out just about all my computer time.

Quick update – Since Ryan quit napping right after Christmas, I made the decision to cut down/out the computer time because it was becoming unsafe to not monitor him at all times. Even now I’m watching him over my shoulder, but he’s eating at the moment. He is into everything, climbing up on ledges, cabinets, tables, etc. He still will often throw things, including pitchers of juice, etc. He is in speech therapy 3x a week still and starts preschool in 2 weeks (2/28). I am looking forward to a break and I think some structured school time will be good for him as well. He barely made it (by 2 points or so) into the special needs class in our city due to his speech. Of course that means we are hopeful he will be catching up on speech even further, which means he wouldn’t be eligible next year, but then maybe he can get into headstart. He will be in a special needs/typical mixed preschool from 2/28 until end of year in May.

Chris is still sleeping well and fairly healthy. He has periodic fits still where he runs through the house hitting himself and us and the walls – maybe 2x a week at this point (down from 2-3 times a day at Christmas when he had a cold).

Colleen is doing well in school and has speech and OT as well. She is also going to counseling 1x a week, since November.

Our work situation is still the same, Rog is looking, not finding anything, but his work is steady, and I had to stop looking “for” him as my job is these kids’ mom and right now Ryan is my biggest challenge. We have lost our insurance, but the kids still have theirs. Thank God.

I’d better go… I’ll try and post when he goes to school 😉

Comments: He actually quit napping before Christmas, but I was still putting him down for nap times and he’d nap about 1x a week. But what happened right after Christmas scared me so much I stopped putting him down – he jumped up and down so much that somehow he hit his face on the crib bars and split his lip and bruised his gum. We thought he’d have to go to the ER it was bleeding so much. But it stopped, and it healed up. But no more “quiet time” in the day in the crib for him…

Christmas!

Yes, I remember Thanksgiving is coming, and I’m ready – I LOVE Thanksgiving! But I just wanted to get my Christmas background done here before it’s almost Christmas and I have no time to do it!!!

We’re surviving okay – Chris is having a little trouble sleeping again which isn’t fun but it’s not as bad as it was. We have a problem with his ears being blocked up right now which we’re not sure how to deal with.

I’m trying to get Christmas shopping done early so I can just deal with all the school events, etc., in December! I already am starting Christmas card/newsletter prep. I hope to get them out by Dec 1!!!! We are overbooked with activities – here’s our schedule: (And remember our busy 2 3/4 year old is with -me ALL the time, doesn’t nap, and sleeps like 8-5 a.m. (I can’t go to bed at 8 because of other kids still being up until 10 or so).

Comments: kind of long financial vent, feel free to scroll, but prayers appreciated anyway!

Hi – not reading tonight yet, just posting. I just went through to do papers, did my filing, and went through bills (ugh!). I still would appreciate prayers for our financial situation — I thought we were actually doing okay at the moment but when I checked my checkbook online saw that we were under. I had to rush my unemployment check to the bank (thank God I got it early! today to keep lots of fees from happening. I just keep wondering if as soon as this unemployment is over (I have 3 more checks coming) I should really try and get a night job at McDonalds or KMart or something — the secretarial jobs just aren’t coming through, not even non-legal ones. Obviously my attendance problems are huge and the last place is probably saying terrible things about my skills, even though my typing skills are very good.

I love Degrassi – can’t wait for new season!  (watch on the “N” on our new digital cable which I don’t want to get rid of with our “broke-ness” now….)

Doing great, though I feel bad I missed church.  Chris fell asleep just moments before we left!  He is doing very well – naps every day still (a little earlier than expected today – usually he’s nodding off a bit at church which is a GOOD thing).  So next week I’ll give him the pill a little later.

it is a lazy Sunday and I have SO much cleaning to do.

Last I wrote Chris was having a VERY VERY VERY bad time. We had an awful 4 months – February – sinus infections, ear infections with ear injury from hitting; March, 2 ear surgeries, missed most of the whole month off of school, plus drug reaction to Seroquel/Risperdol and withdrawal; April, entire month, I believe, from school, just about (he may have gone a week or so), had 1-2 more sinus infections; May, Tonsillectomy/Adenoidectomy, and finally had to start more meds as he was still being aggressive, self-injurious, and very very upset and not sleeping at all hardly (like 3-4 hours every few days is all); and June started horribly as well but FINALLY last 3-4 days his new meds (Tenex) is kicking in and he’s sleeping a little more and is seeming happier. FINALLY.
